Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight, PA MEDI Program – Medicare Insurance Counseling, Outreach and Education

After completion of the Medicare training program, help beneficiaries with Medicare questions, health plan selection, plan comparisons, screen for cost savings program eligibility, and help apply for assistance programs. Initial counselor training includes about 12 hours of on-line, self-paced modules and 15 hours of live webinar or in-person trainings. Medicare updates training can be about 12 hours a year. Initial training for other volunteer roles includes on-line modules and additional in-person or virtual sessions.

Copying, general filing, triaging inbound calls and making outbound phone calls, locating and reserving training space, confirming participant attendance, etc.

Make presentations to audiences who want to gain awareness of the PA MEDI program and to provide education on Medicare and accompanying products and programs.

Provide general information about the PA MEDI program and Medicare by transporting materials and supplies, distributing written information, and answering general questions at outreach events.

Ombudsman

Receive extensive training to work to resolve complaints and issues on behalf of individuals residing in long term care settings, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and personal care homes.

Volunteers must reside in a long-term care setting. Receive training to advocate to improve the quality of life for all residents in your housing complex.

Home-Delivered and Congregate Meals

Senior Corps

Provide assistance and friendship to seniors by helping with daily living tasks at a supportive housing program, providing supportive services such as transportation to appointments, assistance with grocery shopping, and cooking meals. Volunteers must be age 55 and older.

Tutor, mentor, or become a friend to children who need one. Provide one-on-one support to children with special needs to improve their academic, social, or emotional development. The volunteers help children learn to read and provide one-on-one tutoring; mentor trouble teenagers and young mothers; care for premature infants or children with disabilities; help children who have been abused or neglected. Volunteers must be age 55 and older.

Use your skills and talents to provide assistance at events such as community clean up, tax preparation, holiday events at hospitals, renovating homes for low-income individuals, or deliver meals and groceries to individuals with limited or no support. Volunteers must be age 55 and older.

Other Programs

Family Caregiver Support Program (eligible volunteers must be age 18 or older) Provide primary caregivers with a break from their daily caregiving activities

Health & Wellness programs focus on keeping older adults (60 and older) healthy, manage chronic conditions, prevent injury, and disease through evidence-based approaches. Programs include classes on chronic conditions, injury and disease prevention, mental health, substance abuse, medication-management, exercise, and nutrition. There are approximately 32 Health & Wellness Evidence-Based Programs available offered by the Area Agencies on Aging across the state.
Each Health & Wellness program requires a varying degree of training time and commitment.

Variety of volunteer opportunities available.

Provide advice, expertise, and support to an organization or program through regular meetings while offering insights and recommendations based on knowledge and experience.

Provide support as an “as-needed” volunteer to assist with seasonal activities, special events, and short-term projects.
